Even before we become teenagers we are taught that we “have to” wear bras. The reasons vary: it might be because “others shouldn´t see what´s underneath the clothes” or because “it´s a way to prevent your breast from sagging.” Most of the time, we just accept it without doing some research since our moms, teachers, sisters and friends have been repeating the same story over the years, they must be right!
The truth is that we all feel some kind of freedom everytime we make it home and we can get rid of our bra. It doesn't matter if it has lace, a sport bra or if you just bought it to wear it with a pretty blouse. That relief has no comparison! But wait a minute, in what moment did it become a chore? Do we really need to use them everyday?
According to a 15-year study, wearing a bra has no benefits but weakens the muscles that hold up the breasts which increases breasts sagging.
Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports science expert from the University of Besançon, France, reported that "Medically, physiologically, anatomically - breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra."
The study was made with the help of 330 volunteers who were between 15 and 35 years, the researchers found that women who didn't wear bras had a 7 millimeter lift in relation to their shoulders.
Rouillon claims that older women with children might not get any benefits of not wearing bras, the expert points that it was a preliminary study and it would be needed a higher sample to have better results.
On the other hand, a previous research made by the University of Portsmouth, England, shows that many females are damaging their breast by wearing the wrong bras.
This is because breasts move in different directions during exercise: up and down, in and out and from side to side and most bras only limit vertical movements.
Wendy Hedger, a researcher on University of Portsmouth team claims that some women are used to wear certain designs and they won't buy anything else. This decision can have a negative impact since choosing the wrong size or the wrong style can lead to pain and discomfort.
More research is needed in order to know if we can get rid of them or not, maybe we just need to learn to buy a bra that fits our needs or we can give a try to the experiment and stop wearing them for a while!
